Saints Free Agent Guide

Writer's picture: Logan GraffiaLogan Graffia

NFL Free Agency is vastly approaching and there will be a plethora of players that show raise the Saints' eyebrows this offseason. Free Agency begins March 13th.

Saints will have to tread lightly and look for cheaper options per the usual as their salary cap situation will make things difficult to land big money free agents.

Below I will drop a list of players I feel will not only make great additions to the team, but I will also provide their presumed market value according to Spotrac should all player's value be available.

Afterwards I will deep dive into my five favorite potential targets. Without further ado let's get started!

5 Free Agents The Saints Should Target

5. Dorance Armstrong, Defensive End, UFA

Dorance Armstrong is a very interesting player. He had a down year for the Cowboys in the 2023 season only racking up 12 solo tackles after having a career just two seasons ago when he racked up 23 solo tackles. Armstrong has had to rotate on that Cowboys defense, and rightfully so as they have Lawrence and Parsons coming off the edge. But when Armstrong has played he has been productive off the edge. Armstrong could be great in speed rushing packages and provide much needed depth to the Saints' defensive linemen group that lacks a speedy pass rusher.

4. Robert Hunt, Guard, UFA

The Saints are in desperate need of offensive lineman, especially at the offensive guard position. Hunt a, former Ragin Cajun and a former second round pick, could be a young and cheap option for the Saints to plug and play at Left Guard. Hunt has been a versatile lineman as well as he has gotten snaps at Right Tackle. Hunt could very well be an opening week starter for the Saints.

3. Bryce Huff, Linebacker, UFA

Just four years removed from starting his NFL career as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Memphis, Huff ended the 2023 season with a career high in sacks with a total of 10 which led the Jets this season. The Saints season sack leader ended with 8.5 and the next highest ended with 6.5. Bryce Huff could be the next Shaq Barrett in a manner of speaking for the Saints as he not only provides the defense with his ability to play off the edge but you also get someone younger to play in the Linebacker room next to future hall of famer Demario Davis. Saints need to get younger on defense as well as faster and Huff could provide you with that in both aspects.

2. Irv Smith Jr., TE, UFA

The Saints could benefit from adding a better Tight End on the offensive side of the ball. Juwan Johnson finished with a disappointing 368 yards on the season which ranked second to last for yards by a tight end. Irv Smith Jr. a Brother Martin alum could provide you with not only blocking but his pass catching ability of course is what stands out the most as he is a matchup nightmare for most Safeties and Linebackers because of his underrated speed. Smith Jr. also was on the Minnesota Vikings at the same time as new Saints Offensive Coordinator Klint Kubiak and so there would be some familiarity in that regard.

Jonah Williams, Tackle, UFA

The Left Tackle position is a position that the Saints need to figure out and fast. Trevor Penning has only been in the league for two seasons and both have been thoroughly been disappointing. Penning maybe slides to Guard, and that would leave you a gap at Left Tackle of course. Enter Jonah Williams. The former first-round pick had a streak of 37 consecutive starts including postseason at Left Tackle, before suffering a left knee injury in 2022 Wild Card Playoff vs. Baltimore that ended his season. While the Saints could also look to the draft for yet another offensive lineman, Williams could start for the team right away at Left Tackle, or even Right Tackle as we do not know the future of Ryan Ramcyzk still. Jonah Williams fills a need but could come at a cost.

Epilogue

The keys for the Saints this free agency cycle is to fill needs but at the same time get younger on both sides of the ball, especially the defensive side of the ball. Yes you can get out of salary cap hell as the team does every season and sign young, cheap options in free agency that can help you stay competitive. The biggest need is both defensive and offensive lineman and you can find a plethora of options before the draft. This free agency is one of the most important cycles for the Saints in recent memory. Free Agency begins March 13 at the start of the new league year.
